How the Draw Works

The US Open singles draw consists of 128 players in a single-elimination knockout format. The top 32 players are seeded based on their ATP/WTA rankings and placed strategically to avoid meeting until later rounds.

  • Seeding: Seeds 1-32 are distributed across the draw. Top seeds (#1-4) are placed in separate quarters to avoid meeting until semifinals.
  • Protected Sections: Seeds 5-8, 9-16, and 17-32 are similarly distributed to maintain competitive balance.
  • Unseeded Players: The remaining 96 players (those ranked 33+) are randomly drawn into the bracket, potentially facing top seeds in Round 1.
  • Draw Ceremony: Held one week before the tournament, the ceremony places all players and determines first-round matchups.
